A loyal friend remembered: Serge Forget, 58, of Cliffside Park

A DEAR FRIEND WRITES: “Don’t slip on the ice.”

Serge Forget would have said that this morning. He’d say it most days, in fact. It was his version of “Be careful.”

Serge, who attended grade school at Epiphany Church with me when we were growing in Cliffside Park, died two Sundays ago — a day after driving me to the church so that I could get the best vantage point to take photos for CLIFFVIEW PILOT of Officer Michael Petruzzello’s funeral. He was 58.

Richard Criscione (CLIFFVIEW PILOT Senior Correspondent)

Richard Criscione (CLIFFVIEW PILOT Senior Correspondent)

Serge, who was born in Canada and came with his family to Cliffside Park in fourth grade, was the first friend I made at Epiphany. We remained friends for the rest of his life. He often took me on photo assignments when I needed it. His nickname for me was “Chardo.”

Serge was pretty much a private person. He never married. Family and friends always came first. So did his country: As an adult, Serge became a U.S. citizen.

It’s telling that, as part of the NJ Sharing Network, Serge directed that his organs be donated.

His loss is deeply felt by his friends, as well as by his mother, two brothers and four nieces.

Serge touched many people’s lives.

His generosity and good nature will be missed.

SHOUT OUT: A Paramus non-profit organization created by four dance moms who wanted to give back to their community will be the center of attention at an upcoming New Jersey Devils home game, thanks to a story on CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

The Dancer’s Dream Fund will get a portion of ticket sales, along with proceeds from a 50/50 raffle, at the April 3 game against the Montreal Canadiens at The Prudential Center in Newark.

Tickets for the Friday night game are available at a discount through the fund — and come with a free gift from the Devils (see below).

A member of the Devils’ front office contacted the Dancer’s Dream Fund after seeing a Nov. 27 story last year: Paramus non-profit awards grants to local dancers

“We set up a meeting the following week, took a tour of The Prudential Center and then he extended the invitation to us,” said Monica Byrne, the fund’s president.

The Dancer’s Dream Fund raises money through various events, fundraising and direct contributions to help local disadvantaged children through scholarships, grants and programs “to fuel their love of dance and the performing arts,” Byrne said.

The Devils, through their Community Assist Program, highlights a local 501(c)3 organization during home games.

The non-profits are given space in the main concourse, where they can set up vendor’s boothes to distribute marketing materials. There’s also a public service announcement about the organization on the Jumbotron during the game.

Fort Lee merchants donate more than $7,000 in gift cards to Edgewater fire victims

SHOUT OUT: Fort Lee merchants have banded together to help the residents of the Avalon apartment complex in the wake of last month’s devastating fire.

Members of the Business District Alliance (BDA) of Fort Lee donated nearly $5,000 by purchasing gift cards for area restaurants and other businesses selected on the basis of a priority list provided by the Edgewater Strong charity.

BDAFLlist1111The members then got area business owners and others in town to kick in $2,400 more worth of cards (see list, below).

The cards were being distributed by Edgewater Strong.

“I want to thank our valued business owners in Fort Lee who were quick and happy to help the numerous families impacted by this terrible fire, “said Romina Luppino-Starace, president of the non-profit BDA of Fort Lee.

“Because of their generosity and that of our board members, we can do our part to ensure these families have the basic essentials they need to get back on their feet.”

“It’s about neighbors helping neighbors, “said Stuart Z. Koperweis, Executive Director of the BDA of Fort Lee. “BDA Board members live, work, and own businesses in Bergen County.

“Their commitment to helping their neighbors is evident in the selfless service they provide to the BDA by giving countless time, energy, and talent to Fort Lee,” Koperweis said.

“So it came as no surprise when board members voted unanimously in favor of donating funds from the BDA to give to the fire victims, while supporting the local businesses,” he said.

Luis Feliciano’s 17-year-old son called police at 5:56 p.m. from the car, which was stopped in a westbound lane just off the bridge near Lemoine Avenue.

Family seeks help finding missing Upper Saddle River bearded collie

HAVE YOU SEEN HER? The search continued tonight for a 9-year-old bearded collie from Upper Saddle River named Madison after several sightings in and around Woodcliff Lake.

Madison, who’s been missing since Friday, is white, black and gray, about 50 pounds and in perfectly good health.

But beware: Although one of five well-trained champion dogs owned by John and Leslie Cosares, “she’s the only one of the group who’s skittish, even at home,” their daughter, Justine, told CLIFFVIEW PILOT tonight.

“If she doesn’t know you, she’ll run,” she said. “So please don’t chase her.”

The Cosareses were about to board Madison with a nearby veterinarian before heading to a trade show in Las Vegas when she bolted.

Since then, their daughter has been posting fliers and contacting police and fire departments and animal shelters and hospitals. Meanwhile, a groundswell of Facebook support continued to expand — friends and strangers alike have been posting fliers at vets and elsewhere while sharing online links and tips.

One idea that Justine Cosares was considering was taking one of her parents’ other beardies out and around.

“It’s like a needle in a haystack right now, so it’s worth a try,” she said tonight. “We’re hoping someone can find her.”

If you see Madison and/or can get hold of her, call Justine Cosares: (347) 840-0200

SHOUT OUT: A 9-year-old bearded collie named Madison from Upper Saddle River who went missing on Friday turned up today — outside her family’s house.

Robin Urman of Pet ResQ Inc. swung by the home of John and Leslie Cosares today “and there she was on the deck, wagging her tail,” their daughter, Justine, told CLIFFVIEW PILOT this afternoon.

Madison looked none the worse for wear, wasn’t bleeding but definitely needed a grooming, she said.

She also scarfed down a large bowl of food and another of water, mingled happily with the family’s other champion beardies and headed to the vet.

Cosares had been shuttling between her home in Queens and North Jersey, putting up fliers and contacting various agencies and people since Friday. Her parents were about to board Madison with a nearby veterinarian before heading on a required business trip to Las Vegas that day when she bolted.

“I was on no sleep for about three days,” their daughter said. “So Robin told me to stay home today.”

When Madison spotted Urman, a close friend of Cosares, “she went right to her,” she said.

“There were footprints and no way for her to get back into the yard,” Urman said, “so I broke a hole in the fence put out food and towels that smelt like her siblings and sprinkled [the father’s] cologne along the sidewalk.

“9 out of 10 will head home,” she said.

What began as a groundswell of Facebook support exploded the past several days, as friends and strangers alike posted fliers at vets, shelters and animal hospitals while sharing online links and tips — and searching the streets in Upper Saddle River, Woodcliff Lake and other areas where Madison was reportedly spotted.

“I don’t know what to say,” Cosares told CLIFFVIEW PILOT today. “People have been amazing.

“I want to thank EVERYONE,” she said. READ MORE….

SHOUT OUT: A critical component of the consolidation of the Bergen County Police Department into the sheriff’s office was put into place this week when Bergen County Sheriff Michael Saudino promoted Kevin Pell to chief of his department.

A career law enforcement professional, Pell was among a group of select police professionals who Saudino said helped him “quickly formulate a template for a smooth transition once the realignment becomes official later this month.”

BCSO Chief Kevin Pell (PHOTOS: Courtesy BERGEN COUNTY SHERIFF)

“Throughout this process Kevin has demonstrated true leadership with a vision for the future which made him a logical choice to lead the rank and file of the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office,” Saudino said.

As chief, he will oversee daily operations, including administration and budget, as well as all units excluding Corrections.

Pell become a county corrections officer in 1992, maintaining housing and security operations at the jail.

He quickly moved up the ranks and in 2002 was promoted to sergeant, followed by a promotion to lieutenant in 2005 and captain four years later.

As captain, he coordinated the officer’s three-year successful accreditation program.

Last year, Saudino promoted Pell to inspector.

Pell, a state-certified public manager and police instructor, studied advanced leadership in the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development program.

TRIBUTE: Fallen Police Officers Christopher Goodell of Waldwick and Stephen Petruzzello of Cliffside Park will be on the minds of many of the riders participating in this year’s Policy Unity Tour.

Contingents from Bergen County and elsewhere will be honoring Goodell, 32, who was working a radar detail in his unmarked cruiser, parked on the shoulder of southbound Route 17, when it was struck by an 18-wheeler driven by a Brooklyn trucker the morning of July 17 last year. The impact instantly killed him.

They’ll also honor Petruzzello, 22, who died of injuries after he fellow rookie Thaier (Theo) Abdallah were hit by an SUV on a borough street the night of Dec. 27. Petruzzello, who was a special officer at the time, was promoted to a full-fledged position by the borough mayor and council hours after his death two days later.

The 330-mile North Jersey leg of the ride sets off in East Hanover in Morris County on May 9 and will arrive at the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington, D.C. on May 12.

Paramus Police Motor Officers Pete Arvidson, Brian Linden, and Thomas Schroeder will be among those riding police motorcycles to escort a contingent of bicyclists in the ride, which helps raise awareness and funds for the expansion, maintenance and preservation of the memorial.

Paramus police are also selling t-shirts to help meet their own fundraising minimum goal of $5,550.

Lynhurst emergency responders are hostng a Harlems Wizards basketball at Lyndhurt High School on March 7 to raise funds.

The ride is part of National Police Week, during which a variety of special events are held, including a candelight vigil that regularly draws tents of thousands to the memorial to dedicate the names of 118 police officers killed in the line of duty last year across the United States.

Cliffside Park P.O. Stephen Petruzzello

These include Goodell and Petruzzello, as well as Jersey City Police Detective Melvin Santiago, who was shot and killed last July 13 while responding to a holdup, and NYPD Officers Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos, who were gunned down in cold blood as they sat in their cruiser on a Brooklyn street corner last year just days before Christmas.

All of their names will be added to the memorial.

Retired Cliffside Park Capt. Anthony Frado will join Sgt. J.D. York and Officer Sergio Khanukayev — who were instrumental in having Petruzzello’s name added to the memorial — will be riding in his honor.

What began with 18 cyclists 15 years ago has grown to more than 1,800 nationwide — and dozens from throughout Bergen County — who’ll be making this spring’s trip.

Participants come from other countries, as well, and leave from six “spokes” along the East Coast.

Each has pledged to raise the minimum $2,000 required to participate.

Last year’s ride produced $1.9 million in donations, bringing the total since 1997 to nearly $16
Goodell, 32, joined the U.S. Marine Corps after being graduated from Waldwick High School in 2000. He served with the Waldwick Police Department for five years and was honored by Mothers Against Drunk Driving’s New Jersey chapter for outstanding efforts in drunk driving enforcement.

Survived by his parents and fiancee, Goodell was “an outstanding and proactive officer,” Waldwick Police Chief Mark Messner said.
